Uno and Mariko
In Yokohama Monogatari (ヨコハマ物語) by Yamato Waki (大和和紀) Uno and Mariko were best friends. They grew up together, studied together, loving the same man and fighting for what they loved and believed in together. However, Mariko had to marry for money to save her family for financial ruin. Uno then travelled to America to find the man they both loved. Their paths separated but eventually they were reunited, both married and still best friends at heart. Both these Yokohama ladies were courageous in the time when most people were losing hope. Mariko took care of her family's financial situation without her husband's help and making deals with foreigners while Uno faced much controversies in the US, being mistaken as a prostitute, working her way to see the man she loved, a doctor in the time of Cholera. She faced life and death situations and they made her strong.
