While Mariko stayed home to marry Ryusuke, Uno journeyed on a ship to America to tell Shin that Mariko already married to save her family. Uno travelled far and met with many adventures including being mistaken as a prostitute because at that time all astrayed Japanese women were prostitutes. However, Uno was educated and had medical training, she was able to use her skills to her advantage. Uno even cut her hair so that she would not be taken advantaged of.

Uno eventually found Shin and when Shin found out that Mariko married someone else, he became a drunk and it was Uno who nurtured him back to sanity.

The story got complicated when Ryusuke 's business met with difficulties. Mariko also had to save Ryusuke and meanwhile, she was falling in love with him.

Later on, Mariko got pregnant and gave birth to a baby who was stillborn at first but turned out to be ok after all. In the end, Shin fell in love with Uno and they got together. Ryusuke lost his fortunes and left to find new ventures leaving his loving wife, Mariko to wait for him which she was happy to.
