In the story of Yokohama Monogatari or ヨコハマ物語, Uno and Mariko were always wearing Japanese kimono except towards the end of the story when Western influence rose.

While Uno's life revolves around her journey to find the man she loved who was Mariko's fiance, Mariko's life revolves around Yokohama, the man she married, her business, and the challenge brought about by Western influence. At first it seemed like Mariko's life was going to be dull since Uno left for the Americas while Mariko was unable to leave Yokohama. However, Mariko's husband had a past and his business contacts got Mariko involved with deception and adventures.

Mariko had to remain strong to overcome obstacles to help her husband, her own family business and finding the real man she loved.
